General Advisory 3 of 3: A very messy affair. Why not go with a local, reputable, and service-oriented office-based install company?

General Advisory 3 of 3: A very messy affair: Why not go with a local, reputable, and service-oriented office-based install company?

You’d think we were making this up but feel free to ask our long time friends and customers in Hua Hin and you’ll know that we operate an honest, family-owned and “by the book” solar supply and install company (see also pictures below).

When we install our solar systems we expect the systems to operate properly and safely for up to 15-20 years. We carry the warranties on over 10 products as Solar Shop is the factory authorized dealer and installer. We install systems so they meet PEA-standards 100%. We have done our homework and provide highest standard installs top-to-bottom. It’s cost money to do this properly – sorry … you can’t do this on a small budget. We have told each of our customers with PEA electric meters that registry is required. The government has set up their system so home owners can self-register. However it’s difficult to do. Working with the Ministry of Energy and PEA head office some obstacles to participating in the process have now been removed. The government asks installers to help guide customers through the process. Installers charge to help with registry. We deliver on our promises to register our customers correctly, legally and as fast as possible.

When you have your solar system installed you need to ensure that your inverter is PEA approved to be connected to the grid and is on the PEA (or MEA) List of approved inverters. You need to have an export meter so you can control export of excess solar power going to the grid. You need to know that your panels are not counterfeit (this is hard to do so go back to hiring a trustworthy installer who is always truthful). You need to ensure that the solar install is PEA standard and is safe.

If you have had a solar system installed at your home you may have received a long letter from the PEA requiring registration (or face consequences). We are busy helping our customers at Solar Shop Hua Hin get quickly registered. We have been approached by households who chose other installers to install their solar systems. So we went to their homes to see if and how we could help. The first 6 houses we visited had the following problems:

-Installers not helping with registries. If the solar salesman is telling you it’s ok to spin your meter backwards cause “everyone does it” and there is no need to register – be buyer beware

-On-grid systems not connected to the house electric-grid correctly nor safely

-Fake counterfeit solar panels with no factory warranty (no idea what panel they were illegally rebranded from, nor how long they were used before refurbishment and sold as new-sadly now on many roofs in the Hua Hin area)

-Non-pea approved solar inverters (so to register the owner needs to buy new). I mean certain solar installers sourcing supply of non-PEA approved inverters from at least 4 different brands? That takes the art of scamming people to an entirely different level.

-Non-pea standard wiring, circuits, safety barriers and or electrical components

-Export meter (a PEA requirement) incorrectly installed, non-functioning or not installed at all, improper system design and low voltage from panel sets

-Non-existent, disconnected, sub-standard grounding

-Incorrect roof mounting techniques (which will lead to roof leaking in the near future – I mean cheap L-feet drilled into roof tiles, seriously? Curtain rails and home made hooks? And of course the home owner complained that his roof leaked. And wall-cinder block mountings on a flat cement roof top cemented using only tile glue? The home owner’s workers could kick the cinder blocks loose. How will that hold the panels in place during a strong wind storm?)

-Non-standard PV cable runs

-Installer not following through on service promises, even when written in the contract

-Installer contract is not legally put together – acts more like a memorandum or invoice than a contract

-And I probably have missed a few items that our electrical engineer, master electrician and our experienced roofer team found.

We went to one house and the owner showed us that the solar electric wiring (in the solar combiner/control box) was openly arcing (short circuit). The owner said he had contacted their installer to help fix the bright light they were seeing (for more info read: https://www.cableorganizer.com/learning-center/articles/what-is-arc-flash.html ) but the customer then said that their installer blocked their phone and wouldn’t help. Not knowing what to do they left their solar system running with potentially dangerous consequences. I’m sure people do know that solar systems produce high electric current and may also have high voltage. Solar systems when improperly installed can pose a fire hazard to your home. Surely everyone knows that?

A fellow recently posted on fb forums the invoice of an install company from Bangkok. Boasted about about what a good deal they were.

Interesting invoice. Just to make a few comments.

-No registry of the on-grid connected system? This needs to filed and acquired locally within your State of residence. So good idea to use a local in-state installer.

-No website?

-1-Year warranty on the install – we give 2 and are local. From our office we often drive 5-20 minutes up the road to come have a coffee with and help our customers with their systems. And we actually show up – just ask our customers. And after the warranty period we still come help our customers. If you don’t believe it, just ask our customers or check out our testimonials @

Testimonials

The customer boasted that the company was a PEA registered install group. No such thing but if the install company advertised this it a very great sales job. To be correct, a company can be PEA recommended (as is the case with our company).

So Why Do You Have to Register Your Grid-Connected System?

The purpose of the Ministry of Energy and PEA registries is not primarily to put a 1-way meter on homes with solar systems. It is to ensure that all systems meet PEA electrical standards. Know that the PEA Inverter List applies to inverters outside of Bangkok. The MEA Inverter List applies to inverters who have MEA electric meters @ Bangkok. There are thousands of sub-standard systems installed nation-wide connected to the PEA grid. We know this because we are called in to fix or upgrade solar systems on a regular basis. The PEA is concerned about this. Non-PEA standard systems may damage the PEA grid systems and may present unsafe conditions for PEA workers working on their grids.

Be Buyer Beware

It becomes obvious that quite a majority of people honestly don’t really know much about solar system installs. This means you need to buy your system from a group that is reputable and can be trusted with your business. Be Buyer Beware. When purchasing a solar system you should know that there are a lot of short cuts and scams that can be gifted to you during and after the install. And the worst thing that can also happen is the operator does not follow through with after care service.

To Conclude

How would you feel if you had to pay to upgrade your solar system immediately after you purchased a solar system install? It’s the age-old story. You think you got a deal. But you end up spending more money than if you had hired a proper install group the first time.

So … Shouldn’t you hire a reputable group that has a local office and local services, follows the laws of the land and excellent reputation to install your solar system? Choose a local install company that will help you have success long-term with your new solar system. It’s your wise choice.

Special Note: The point of writing this Blog was not to discourage you in any way. Absolutely “Go Solar Today.” Even our family has a solar system at our private residence and yes it’s fully MOEnergy/PEA registered already. And why Go Solar? Solar systems allow you to produce your own clean green power and let’s face it, it is the only item on your property that “wakes up” everyday at sunrise and “goes to work” making you money!

General Advisory 2 of 3: Knock-Off Panels? Seriously?

General Advisory 2 of 3: Knock-Off Panels? Seriously?
Solar Shop is the factory authorized dealer for Solax, GoodWe, AlphaESS inverters as well as Seraphim and Longi solar panels for Thailand (to name a few of our products). We carry the warranties for our equipment. As there seems to be some misunderstandings about how to install and or use our equipment we will be giving regular advise to our potential customers on fb. Happy to hear from solar owners who have been lead down the wrong path with their installs.
Lesson #1: The maximum panels that can be installed with our 1 phase Solax 5.0 Boost and 3 phase Solax X3 5T inverters is 16 panels. 32 panels max for the Solax X3 10T inverter. Install more and risk over voltage, over heating the inverter and shortening the lifespan of the inverter.
Lesson #2: If you do not purchase our factory authorized products through our company we cannot guarantee warranty coverage. We have discovered – with factory verification – fake “Seraphim” panels (both in a warehouse and on a customer roofs) that were / are actually low grade “knock offs,” rebranded from another panel with fake sticker labels placed on the backs of the panels. As we have the legal right to protect our equipment supply. We will be taking appropriate steps to correct this situation. If you have a model of Seraphim panels on your roof Not Listed Here contact us for you free system checkup and assessment of warranty coverage of your installed equipment. Here is our complete supply of Seraphim panels that have our warranty coverage:
Seraphim 345W Eclipse
Seraphim 340W and 380W mono
Seraphim 400W, 440W, 540W and 600W half-cut “Blade” panels.
We will be happy to come to your home to verify the validity of Seraphim panels to give solar system customers piece of mind.
Lesson #3: An install group who has been described by customers as not having much luck installing on-grid battery backup systems has been saying lithium batteries are on their way out. Actually, once again. Not true. The “Silicon Valleys” of the world are in full gear producing lithium battery technologies for solar batteries and EV automobiles. Both industries in fact have been acting hand-in-hand and exchanging information and technologies. Our lithium batteries are pretty amazing – compared to the old days. 5-10 year warranties and expected lifespans of (up to) over 20 years with daily power cycling (discharging and charging). Lithium batteries in your home much like your new EV car with its lithium batteries.
Stay tuned for our next educational lessons.
Oh. And a final power savings tip: In addition to adding a solar system to your hole change out your old standard Air Cons with inverter type AC’s. Inverter type AC’s tend to be much lower in power consumption, run silent and are more efficient at maintaining room temperature. We have heard no claims that the lifespans of inverter-type air conditioners are less than the old-style standard types.

Updated Q’s and A’s: Why Seraphim panels? Why Solax inverters?

written by Greg Shaw, Solar Energy Consultant & Managing Director, Solar Shop Hua Hin.

We have been asked by many of our customers to continue our series on the Q’s and A’s regarding solar installations at your home. Here we address some important issues that you should bear in mind when looking for your solar installation company. We have paraphrased (not directly quoted) email chains here to keep the article current and relevant. Enjoy!

Q? What is the checklist I should follow before choosing a solar system and installer?

A: Continued from the Home Page …

Solar inverter is PEA certified to be connected to grid and includes a PEA-required energy export control meter (this includes homes within closed communities). Ensure your installer provides you with excellent training on how to use your solar system (So you do have “peace-of-mind” that you will not have a problem with the PEA in the future).
Solar inverter comes with a LCD display (You’ll be far happier as you can monitor your solar power output and “trouble-shoot” your solar system, especially when there is no WiFi). Choose a solar system with an exceptional smart phone APP that is easy to use and displays your daily solar system power outputs in a meaningful way. Ensure your solar inverter comes with WiFi and all the features including energy export control (It’s worth noting that inverters purchased directly from agents in China may not have these features, WiFi dongles are often sold separately at extra cost and the export control feature can be missing as it’s not required in mainland China). Before buying a hybrid “Battery ready” inverter be sure it can discharge power from batteries to household loads during a “black out”, and has dedicated batteries available in country. 10 out of 10 of Solar Shop’s inverters have all of the features above so you will have better success with your solar system in the long run.
Choose a professional root-top solar installation group. We have a highly-experienced solar roof mounting team of home-building specialists (including a partner with a Masters in Civil Engineering) that know how to install roof-mounted solar panels in a professional manner and prevent roof leaking. For example, we will not drill holes into your ceramic tiled roofs (even if they have been foamed) as it may cause roof leaking in near future. We also have several methods for mounting panels on flat roof tops which have been approved by our partner civil engineer. We will explain everything to you during our free home consultation. Solar Shop Hua Hin has a 100% success rate in guarding against roof-leaking. It is a big reason why we have been chosen as the dedicated solar provider to residential developments in Hua Hin.
Ensure your paperwork with the solar install company represents a legitimate legal contract (If you have a contract in place, (i.e. not just a proposal w/invoice), you can have “peace-of-mind” that all promises made will be honoured.

Q? Does my solar inverter need to be PEA approved? Do I need an energy export meter?

A: Yes and even if your home is located in a closed residential community you should purchase an inverter that is PEA approved to be connected to the grid. You should also have an export meter installed so you can demonstrate energy export control. The inverters that are on the PEA list are as follows. This list is updated regularly throughout the year.

https://www.pea.co.th/Portals/0/Document/vspp/PEA_Inverter_list_12-Nov-19.pdf

Q? What happens if my inverter is not on the PEA list?

A: We recommend that you have an export meter installed and set it so that your street meter does not spin backwards. This also applies to home owners in closed residential communities.

Q? Do I need to register my system with the PEA? Do I need to follow what my development owner says?

A: If you have a private home with a PEA meter you are required to register your solar system with the PEA. The PEA requires registration after solar systems are installed and it is entirely the responsibility of the home owner to register. Also know that a 1-way meter will be installed at your home so it will be important to get the correct sizing for your home. The PEA will also be looking at your solar installer’s electric works to ensure it is “PEA Standard.” You will have “peace-of-mind” knowing that K. Chalerm (our Electrical Engineer) has always ensured that our solar systems are PEA Standard and that our design team always gets solar system sizings correct.

We at Solar Shop Hua Hin regularly advise all of our customers (with PEA meters) on how to go through this process. For our customers (old and new) if you would like more information in regards to this please contact us. For those houses located in closed residential communities you cannot register your solar system with the PEA. This is because you do not have a PEA electric meter for your home. Yes, do your best to follow the community rules that are in place regarding ownership and operation of solar systems within your residential development.

A: My house is located in a closed community with a guard at the front gate but I have a PEA electric meter. So do I need to register my system?

Q? Yes because you have a PEA electric meter.

Q? Why Seraphim “Tier 1” solar panels?

A: Seraphim are top best selling “Tier 1” panel in Thailand. On a bright sunny day you can expect over 2KWh output for each of our MONO hi-perc and/or half-cell solar panels. We also sell Seraphim produced “OEM panels” which are the same panels sold under a different distributor name, “Sunfree.” These are lower in price. All of the 380Wm 400W, 440W, 540W and 600W panels have black frames so they look great on your roof. “Tier 1” means that the company has the highest financial strength in it’s industry. This improves that chances of the solar panel company existing if you have to make a warrantee claim, say, 20 years from now.

Q? So why offer Solax “Hi Tech” solar inverters and not, say, Huawei?

A: It may cost a little bit more, but you do get better technology when you go with Solax inverters. Solax on-grid inverters have LCD displays needed for monitoring and trouble-shooting especially when there is no WiFi. The Solax Cloud smart phone APP is visually-pleasing and easy-to-use. It’s the only inverter lineup that allows you to program your export meter and monitor total house consumption (instantaneously) from the Solax Cloud APP. This information comes in handy when you are fine-tuning the energy savings of your home. Our Solax hybrid systems can discharge over 20KWh at night/ during blackouts and our Triple Power lithium batteries now come with a 10 year warrantee. These features are what sets the Solax inverter lineup apart from the new Huawei inverter lineup (no LCD display, standard APP display, no discharge of batteries during “black outs” and no LG batteries in country until at least Q4, 2020). Surprising really. HuaWei is said to have invested “billions” on it’s solar inverter lineup but the inverters are surprisingly low-tech and missing important features and the dedicated LG battery. Solax inverters can also handle up to 35% oversizing in terms of solar panel power. So the 10KW Solax X3 10T on grid inverter, for example, can be installed with 13.5KW of solar panels. Normal oversizing is about 20%. This ensures that the output from the inverter is very high even when there is a cloudy sky. Extensive studies, conducted in Australia, have shown that sensible oversizing of solar panels has no negative effect on the life expectancy OR the 98%++ efficiency of European Standard inverters (our Solax and GoodWe lineups) OR the 99.9% efficiency of the MPPT trackers (track highest peak power from the solar panels to maximise output of the inverter).

Q? What’s the lifetime of the offered solar panels?

A: The expected lifetime will be over 30 years. They have a 25 year performance warrantee from the Seraphim Energy factory. Solar Shop Hua Hin stocks, services and warrantees the panels in Hua Hin as authorised by the Seraphim Energy factory.

Q? How it the output during the solar panel’s lifetime?

A: They have a linear performance warrantee of over 98% at year 0 to over 83% at year 25. Draw a straight line. They must have a power output performance above the line at all times. Of course they are expected to perform high above the line.

Q? Can I rely to get my investment back quickly?

A: Yes. And it depends on how fast the PEA raises their electric rates (they are on the rise now). And or on the rate at which your developer charges. At 5 baht/unit with your system facing south your payback calculation is quite fast. Feel free to use our solar investmetn calculator on our website to do your own calculations.

Q? Is there any maintenance, if yes, what are the costs and how often do I need to pay?

A: The panels are slick like teflon and will self-clean in the rain. As the system is fully European Standard and our Electrical Engineer Chalerm will ensure the electric works are PEA standard, your solar sustem is expected to run at least 14 years with maintenance – based on studies conducted in Australia on solar systems. You can expect good performance at low maintenance cost.

Q? Should I pay extra to extend my inverter warrantee?

A: In our opinion it is not worth the extra cost – which can be relatively high. The inverters come with a 5 year “no-quibble” warrantee and because they are Euro-Standard they are expected to run at least 14 years without maintenance. If your inverter breaks down after, say, 10 years of operation, it can still be serviced. But also you’d be better off saving your money now and buying in on a new inverter later on – when it undoubtedly higher in technology and most probably offered at a lower price.

Q? Why would you choose Solar Shop Hua Hin as your solar installer and or supplier?

A: Please take time to read through the headlines on our home page. Our company has the mandate to make solar systems affordable without sacrificing exceptional quality and service. With respect to the later we only operate in the Hua Hin, Cha am and Pranburi area making us very responsive in regards to our follow up service. Our team of engineers regularly produce unique designs (works of art and engineering) that meet the requirements of the owner(s). We do spend a lot of time advising people in the Hua Hin area on what is the best system for them – and in certain cases advise people what to avoid. The partners of Solar Shop Hua Hin are engineers with exceptional and diverse experience (please also see our Bios at solarshop-huahin.com/about-us/) and we always do our best to be transparent and honest.

You will see that we are (being honest) the only highly-experienced installer and supplier along the Royal Coast (including Pranburi, Hua Hin and Cha-am) with an online solar shop with products in hand (all products from THE authorised suppliers in Bangkok with THE only exclusive warrantees and service commitments in Thailand. We cannot be beaten on price for same-same equipment (i.e. PEA certified to be connected to the grid), service quality and home safety (roof leaking and electrical fire prevention). This is because we NEVER lower our standards! Our electric works are 100% PEA (Provincial Electric Authority) standard and our team of electricians, managed by Chalerm (Masters Electrical Engineering) are highly competent. We have a highly-experienced solar roof mounting team of home-building specialists that know how to install in a professional manner and prevent roof leaking. The old motto, “You get what you pay for!”, certainly applies to the solar industry.

We meet with the PEA regularly so we can truthfully guide you on how to remain compliant with your solar systems. All of our recent installations (even in closed communities) have PEA Certified Inverters and PEA Required Export Control Meters.

Q? I read some article that it is now possible to sell electricity back to the grid in Thailand, is that true?

A: New legislation in regards to feed-in-tariffs has been enacted into law. As you’ll know the last time licences were mainly given to a few people within elitist social circles. This time around the application process if more fair and available to the general public. Applying for a permit to sell electricity can be a lengthy process that requires quite a bit of paperwork / supporting documents that must be first approved. An application fee follows. (Noted at the time of writing) Upon successful application, solar electricity will be purchased at 1.68 Baht/unit and units will only be purchased by the PEA certain hours of the day. So far, most people have chosen not to apply for the permit and go ahead and install their solar systems. About 20% of the available roof top solar panel output allotment (10MW) was processed in Thailand in 2019 for sell to the grid. The Ministry of Energy announced the continuation of the program through 2020 and now applications can be made online.

Q? What will be the materials used for the installation (i.e. mounting gear, cabling)?

A: About wiring and accessories. Charlerm (Ooh) my partner sources the best materials available at competitive pricing. Again our cables (25 year expected lifetime) and electric works are sources from the authorized dealers in Bangkok who handle the warrantee claims in country. Wiring will be 100% PEA standard. The roof mountings exceptional. We also typically install with black mounting equipment (rails, mid- and end-clamps) that have added “anti-corrosion” coating, important as we are living in a ocean-side city. Know it is very easy to substitute these items with “cheap Chinese junk” that can even represent electrical fire hazards and pass them off. It all comes down to if you trust the installer manager. My partner is quite Western in his approach and worries about quality and safety. He is also very experienced. You will have to trust that you are in good hands. Know we have ran into a number of examples where other groups have not practiced what they preached and customers have been left asking questions about the quality and safety of electrical and accessory works installed. Recently for instance we bought roof mounting hooks from a local supplier. Chalerm could break them in half with his bare hands. These roof mountings are supposed to secure solar panels even in the strongest wind storms. Obviously Chalerm must be discerning when choosing materials and wiring.

Q? What is included in all of your solar system installations?

A:

The following electric works, accessories and PEA standard installation is included for every job:

1) European Standard, PEA Approved inverter with WiFi included and export control meter capability.
With stock, warrantee and servicing from Solar Shop Hua Hin (the local “Tier 1” supplier for Hua Hin).
2) European Standard, highest quality with “Tier 1” solar panel offers. Solar panels with black frames
so they look beautiful on your roof. With stock, warrantee and servicing from Solar Shop Hua Hin
(the local “Tier 1” supplier for Hua Hin).
3) Export Control Meter
4) Solar Combiner box with fuses, surge protectors and breakers.
5) L-feet Mounting System for metal flat sheet and corrugated steel for corrugates roofs ONLY.
CPAC Mounting System for ceramic tiles ONLY. We do not drill holes in your ceramic tiles even if your
roof has been foamed. Civil Engineer approved anchoring and mounting methods for flat roofs, for long term safety.
6) All cabling and connections, for the system. Ask about our “all black” mounting equipment with added
“anti-corrosion” coating – great for installations so close to the salty sea.
7) Includes professional PEA standard installation, set up, and system testing.
8) All conduit and boxes, for securing the cables and electrical
components.

Q? Will my roof leak if I have solar panels installed at my home?

A: The answer is ‘No’ if you have an experienced and trustworthy installation team. We have a perfect 100% record when it comes to not having any leaks in roofs where we have installed solar panels. Feel free to check around town with all the residential developers for verify this. It is a big reason why we are the dedicated solar provider at several developments now. You may have heard the story of the solar company team installing in the Hua Hin area which broke roof tiles (leading to roof leaking) as well as ceiling gypsum board and then refused to accept responsibility, replace/repair or pay for the damage. This is why it’s important that you select an installation company that you can trust. The installation team needs to be careful while working on and under your roof. The solar company needs to be honest. Did they leave your house in the exact state/condition as before the job? Will they let you know about a tile breaking if it occurs. Incidentally the solar company has been banned from working at the development permanently.

Same Q again = Must be very important? ‘Hi gregory, Thanks for quotation how do you guarantee, the holes through the roof, to secure the panel from any water leaks during 10 years or more technically?’

A: Hi, Please see attached pictures (copyright care of Nattypicturesphotography) of an installation at another development. The mounting gear using the “CPAC roof mounting method” seats directly under the tiles. The tile immediately above each “hook” is only lifted millimeters to accommodate this. So there are no holes created in your roof during installation. The roof tiles will not noticeably change in profile and water will run off of them in a normal manner.
I hope this explanation helps. Kind Regards, Greg.’

For further explanation pls. see our video on Hua Hin Solar’s web homepage: solarshop-huahin.com :0)

A: Repeating again, and for example, we will not drill holes into your ceramic tiled roofs (even if they have been foamed) as it may cause roof leaking in near future. We have several methods for mounting panels on flat roof tops which have been approved by our partner civil engineer. We will explain everything to you during our free home consultation.

Q: Can the Hua Hin Solar team be trusted to install at our home while we are away?

Yes we have performed several installations while the customer has been away. The house was left in the same condition as it was found. Except, of course, there was a solar system added to the property ;O)

Q? ‘Hi, One more question in case of typhoon? If the panels get damaged? Guaranty or insurance? Thx’

A: Thank you for your email with your question.
Sorry but there is no coverage in the 10 or 12 year manufacturer warrantee (length of warrantee depends on panel manufacturer) and also there is no coverage in the Hua Hin Solar Co., Ltd. limited warrantee on the solar system, if there is damage caused by a typhoon. However, typhoons hitting Thailand typically happen in the NE (inland of Vietnam) and in the south of Thailand closer to Malaysia. As far as we know Hua Hin has not encountered typhoons – at least not in recent history. Thailand has encountered – rain storms and flooding – which are the aftermath of typhoons. Sorry also, we do not offer insurance as our suppliers also do not offer this to us. Pls. ask Jeff about approaching a private insurance company if you would like to pursue this.

FYI: To quote the solar panel supplier/manufacturer warrantee:

“Further exclusions of the limited warranties include defects: Caused by force of nature, […] for instance, earthquake, typhoon, whirlwind, volcanic eruption, flood, lightening, snow damage, etc.”

To quote our 1 year guarantee on the solar system and our work:

“Our warrantees for our products and solar energy systems are limited and do not cover Force majeure (storm damage, lightning strike, fire, thunderstorm, flooding etc.), ….

Kind Regards, Greg.

Q? How do you protect the system from Lightening storm ??? I was living in South West of France where our electrical was fully protection from Lightening by a derivation system to the ground can you do this please?

A: Good morning,

My partner who has a Masters in Electrical Engineering explains:
Each system has: Dc current from solar panels and Ac surge from utility grid protection with circuit breakers.
We also connect grounding for the inverter and surge protection (DC, AC) to main ground of the house.

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards, Greg.

General Advisory 1 of 3: Fixing other installer company solar systems in the Hua Hin area

General Advisory 1 of 3

We have been receiving quite a few emails from local residents to help them to fix their solar systems – which are not working properly or even not at all. For example. This week we successfully repaired and commissioned (in 9 hours) another installer’s hybrid system that even had potential fire hazard issues*. The European home owner, at a luxury development near Black Mountain GCC, went through 2 solar companies operating in Hua Hin before us and figures he is “out-of-pocket” over 111,000 Baht in addition to an unknown financial loss due to reduced drops in his electric bills. We have more examples to include here, and in most every instance the solar system owner has taken a substantial “out-of-pocket” loss.

If you contact us we will certainly do our best to help with your system. Just know, that it can be a challenge to sort out another installer’s mistakes, negligence and or mis-represented sales on components, equipment, warrantees and services.

If when quoted and even if the offered system seems “too good to be true” to avoid losing a lot of money and time and becoming frustrated pls. contract us before you sign a contract for installation.

We are honest about our offerings (no hidden costs) and are very competent in our work/have proper knowledge on how to install and our follow up care. Especially when it comes to home safety and prevention of water-leaking of your roof following installation. We of course take care of our customers honoring service guarantee / warrantee promises and even charge small-small to come help following the guarantee periods.

On February 1 we were asked to go to the luxury development near Black Mountain GCC in reply to an European customer’s email request which read: “I need to check my system SOLAX X3 with 3 batteries triple power.” Our engineer Charlerm “Ooh” (Masters in Electrical Engineer and teaches at the Technical University south of Hua Hin) went to look over the system. The owner explained that he had been through 2 local solar companies and the system was still was not working. It took the first group 1 year to supply batteries and they provided the wrong battery setup (incorrect voltage supply). The owner said he had to involve the government to get the solar company to refund the solar batteries. But didn’t get full cost back and lost 58,000 Baht out of the deal. The latest solar group had just sold the European family 3 lithium batteries. Their invoice noted charge for full installation. The owner noted that the batteries would not charge and the solar panel power output was poor. He showed a sheet on which he had penciled the steady loss of power in the batteries down to 33% over a 3 day period.

The solar system was assessed by our electrical engineer and discussed with full transparency with the home owner. The following was found:

– Set of breakers were by-passed (not used to protect the inverter)
– Set of breakers had burned (he showed the owner the burnt electric equipment)
– The PV cables from the panels were cross-electrically (put into the solar inverter backwards most likely causing burning of electric works)
– The inverter was not programmed properly, the country electrical safety settings of the inverter was not set properly
– The equipment and wiring to select loads (customer wanted to backup everything in his master bedroom incl. inverter air con and all plug-in outlets, his water pump and his kitchen refrigerator, WiFi) was not installed
– And of course there were other smaller electrical repairs/modifications that needed to be done.

Look we are not being dramatic but let’s understand clearly. Bad electric works and especially when mixed in with Lithium batteries can make for a home fire safety hazard. BUT we also emphasis. Done properly the systems last for 15-20 years without issues. The owner showed that the overall price for the non-functioning solar system with 3 Triple Power batteries had cost him (following the contracts) over 25% more than Solar Shop Hua Hin’s standard pricing for the same solar system (including professionally installed – up and running normally with loads selected for “black out” power coverage) with 4 Triple Power batteries. Overall the gentleman was “out-of-pocket” over 111,000 Baht because of incompetence. Not to forget the unknown (but certainly large) loss in money from less than expected energy savings (drop in electric bills) over the 1.5 years of ownership. No “unconditional warrantee” on works performed on the battery installation was given.

A few days later our team was hired (at extra “out of pocket” cost to the owner) to repair and setup the solar system and electric works and ensure that all was in good working order and also set up in terms of home safety. The job was completed in 9 hours. Delivery of power to all the master bedroom loads incl. inverter air con and all plug-in outlets, WiFi router, his water pump and his kitchen refrigerator was proven successful after shutting down power to the house – simulating a “black out.”

As part of the deal, we were asked to change all router and solar system usernames/passwords so the system could protect his system from outside access. After monitoring the system remotely we are pleased with the results (based on our monitoring on the solar system APP on our smart phones). The home owner had this to say 2 weeks later.

“Dear Greg,

We are back to Hua Hin.
The system look running well, it produce 43 to 48 kw per day.
Battery charge appear normal.

Best,
Bernard.”

Two months later Bernard asked us to replace one broken panel and clean the rest of the solar panels on his flat cement roof. This was done without issues. Bernard then donated the broken panel to the University where Chalerm (our company’s electrical engineer) teaches – as Bernard believes in recycling items as best as possible. Four Months later Bernard asked us to add another Triple Power battery and 6 more panels to his system. It was our pleasure to upgrade and keep his system running normally.

Why Choose Solar Shop Hua Hin: Install Your System Today! (Updated Blog)

Why Choose Solar Shop Hua Hin: Install Your System Today!

written by Greg Shaw, Solar Energy Consultant and Managing Director, Solar Shop Hua Hin.

THINGS ARE LOOKING BRIGHT AND SUNNY FOR OUR SOLAR BUSINESS!

We just signed on with customers from Europe, the UK, the US, Australia and Thailand for on- and off-grid solar systems. You’d think that there was a low season for our business. Not this year. Thailand is certainly Go for Solar! Last month we set a new record for our company. We completed 4 installs in 1 week. Why is Solar Shop Hua Hin so busy you ask?

Choosing the right solar system is so much more than receiving a bottom-line price. Firstly, a bit of background about Solar Shop Hua Hin. We have been in business in Hua Hin for over 5 years. Our company offers solar systems that are affordable without sacrificing exceptional quality and service. We are local and family-owned. Our core team only operates in the Hua Hin, Cha am and Pranburi area (not 3 or 4 big cities) making us very responsive to follow-up service and on-site consultation requests. Our team of engineers regularly produce unique designs (works of art and engineering) that meet the requirements of the owner(s). We offer European and PEA Standard solar systems with payback as low as 3 to 5 years. On average we reduce home and business electric bills by over 70%. We do spend a lot of time advising people in the Hua Hin area on what is the best system for them – and also regularly advise people what to avoid. Solar Shop Hua Hin in comprised of a team of engineers with exceptional and diverse experience (please also see our Bios at solarshop-huahin.com/about-us/). We always do our best to be transparent and honest. We are have the lead role a part of a network on installation companies that have installed over 1,000 solar systems across Thailand and Laos. With over 100 solar installations in Hua Hin and southern Thailand and a well-stocked street front store and online green energy shop (solarshop-huahin.com) we are the largest solar system installer and equipment supplier in Hua Hin and along our coastline.

About our team: Our registered company and solar supply shop (located beside the large Maxxis tire shop just up from Big C) is properly staffed to supply exceptional service and follow up care to our valued customers. Our families have been residing in Hua Hin for over 16 years. We have over 50 years experience between K. Chalerm, K. Korawan, K. Penpit and I (Greg) managing businesses ranging from solar energy systems to home construction to property sales in Hua Hin. I am a Mechanical Engineer. Chalerm is an Electrical Engineer (13 years) with a Masters in Electrical Engineering specializing in Solar Energy Engineering. His thesis, successfully defended, was about sine wave output from solar inverters. He has been a certified electrician serving the Hua Hin area for over 20 years. Yes that means that Chalerm has visited many homes performing electrical and solar system works for longer-term residents in Hua Hin.

To expand on how important it is to choose a trustworthy solar installation team. We are running into a number of folks here who are not sizing and designing systems properly and also are not completely informing customers about what they are selling/what customers are buying. One of our clients was quoted, for instance, the wrong size and design for their solar system (NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!). Good thing they contacted us for a free, no pressure, consultation, so we could “Save the Day!”

And a bit more … Chalerm, Solar Shop Hua Hin’s electrical engineer, also sampled some roof mounting gear the other day, bought from a solar distributor near Hua Hin. What was of concern was that he could take the mounting “hooks” (the part that physically connects the solar panels to the roof steel structure) and snap them in half with his bare hands. Loads of questions spring to mind. How would those hooks keep your panels fastened to your roof in a storm with high winds? What would happen if the panels came off and injured someone? Or damaged your/someone’s property? Who would accept responsibility to repair your damaged roof solar system?

We carefully size our systems so as to significantly reduce electricity bills but protect the customer by ensuring that each of our solar systems not only meets the needs and expectations of each house owner, but also aligns with pertinent PEA legislation and local policies.

Please know that during site consultations we are happy to discuss the facts and fallacies of owning a solar system in Thailand. Fact: The PEA does not allow solar system owners to run their monthly bill into negative territory (less than 0 Baht) so it is a real no-go-zone! That’s why its important to ensure your system is sized properly. And what is the point of oversizing a system when the owner will have to switch off the system each month to avoid a negative bill at the end of the month. As we are family-owned, we CARE about our customer’s success with their solar system so we don’t oversize / undersize our customer’s systems and thus over-charge our good clients.

And a bit more … You need an experienced and trustworthy installation team and supplier. You may have heard the story of the solar company team in Thailand which broke roof tiles (leading to roof leaking) in addition to ceiling gypsum board and then refused to accept responsibility, replace/repair or pay for the damage. They even had the gull to blame the development workers. This is why it’s important that you select an installation company that you can trust. The installation team needs to be careful while working on and under your roof. The solar company needs to be honest. Did they leave your house in the exact state/condition as before the job? Will they let you know about it if a mishap ioccurs?

And “buyer beware” … Why choose a solar system company operating in another city like Bangkok or Pattaya? Owners, for one, have complained about poor follow up care. Have a problem with your system? It may take weeks for the company to show up to sort it out. If they show up at all. No kidding! Because this is how local solar system owners in Hua Hin have been treated by their distant installers and suppliers. And why do your online shopping at other Thai, or Chinese-owned, websites? At solarshop-huahin.com we stand behind our products and do so locally. One has to questions the medium- and long-term durability of many of the solar equipment for sale. What’s the point of buying something that has a 1 year warrantee and breaks after 1 year of use? So let me also ask you: When you have a problem will they honor warrantees and exchange items for you quickly? Do you need to ship your inverter to, say, China for several months, on your own dollar – while the factory staff decides if they will replace your equipment as per warrantee terms? We have stock in place in Thailand to replace items quickly if there is a valid warrantee claim. This is because we invest in stock / solar system supplies to serve your needs.

As you may know it’s the “ingredients” (European Standard panel/inverter output/efficiency, wiring, system output, performance, ease of WiFi monitoring, durability, warrantees, follow-up service) and values such as honesty and trustworthiness that count. It is very easy to substitute components of systems with “cheap junk” and pass it off as being top of the line. It is very easy to quote, design and install a system that doesn’t meet the expectations and goals of the customer. Your electrical installation needs to be standard with durability and safety in mind. Chalerm spends a lot of time finding the best, safest and strongest accessories for the price. Our electrical works which form the basis of our solar system installation are PEA Standard. Our solar panels and inverters are European Standard. Plain and simple!

Finally, we are offering now very high quality and yield crystalline PERC panels. We exclusively stock and supply Hua Hin’s newest, high-output Sunfree 330W (poly) and 370W (mono PERC) as well as Seraphim 380W (mono PERC) solar panels. It is worth noting that the 370W and 380W panels also have black cells and black frames making them look beautiful / aesthetically-pleasing on your roof. What’s of interest about the “Tier 1” panels is that the Seraphim company also has a factory in the United States. Feel free to Google ‘Tier 1 Bloomberg Group’, ‘poly mono crystalline’ and ‘PERC’ to better understand the terminology. Our European Standard inverters and lithium batteries (when sold with our Solax hybrid battery-backup inverters) come with a 5 year warrantee. It is truly unique to offer such a long warrantee on the lithium batteries let me assure you. Expected lifespans for our inverters, lithium batteries and solar panels are 15, 10-15 and 30 years respectively. So you will be purchasing a long-lasting system when shopping with us.

We have installed battery backup systems for small to large homes and businesses. We have actual installs ranging from garden lighting projects to large factory installations. Our installations are showing excellent output (exceeding our expectations which is a pleasant surprise). We know the correct way to install systems on sloped and flat roofs – with efficiency and self-cleaning in mind. Our company is legally registered (work permits and company registry in order), we are strongly connected with the community and local electric authorities and we have a follow-up service plan in place for our customers.

Solar Shop Hua Hin 5KW & 10KW Systems Payback Period Now as Low as 3 to 5 Years!

written by Greg Shaw, Solar Energy Consultant and Managing Director, Hua Hin Solar Co., Ltd.

Question: How many years will it take for my 5KW or 10KW system pay itself off?
Answer: Explained in an honest manner in a recent email response to one of our customers.

Dear [valued customer],

Thank you for asking about two scenarios: best case and pessimistic case payback periods for your solar system. We will do our very best to give you a proper answer. To let you know at the start the larger the system you install the faster it will pay itself off and the more money you will make long-term. Also the higher the electricity rate for your home the faster it will pay itself off and the more energy savings you will make long-term.

As you know the 2 answers are estimates only and based on weather patterns so do not accept the answer as hard fact. Only the God’s know what the weather patterns will be in the coming years. But within reason I would say that you are in good hands, because we spent a very long time carefully researching even using Masters of Solar Engineering (Sweden) course material to make our the solar payback calculator that I provided the link to. And the results for a south facing 5KW solar array are decent. Link here:

Solar Investment Calculator

Our calculator is based on the assumption that the Hua Hin-Pranburi-Cha am area receives 5.2 peak sun hours each day on average, throughout any given year.

Pls. read my blog to better understand where 5.2 hrs came from and the definition of a peak sun hour. Link here:

How Many Peak Sun-Hours does Hua Hin Receive?

I also used 5 Baht/watt for your average electricity bill for the next 5-7 years-this is likely conservative as your development owners charge close to this now and they will likely have to raise electricity rates over the years as the electric authority does so – the PEA is already raising it’s electricity rates.

I put the data in our solar payback calculator for a 5KW system (yours is 5.1KW) and the estimated output came out to less than 5 years. So we have an optimal hypothesis: Let’s not be greedy and take this payback of 5.2 years as the optimal.

You should know that it is possible but not guaranteed that the weather could even be sunnier in the coming years, especially with global warming, provide on average of over 5.2 sun hours, and or, if electricity rates go up, this estimate will come down. So that’s good news.

It’s a turkey shoot what to choose for pessimistic weather patterns. So let’s say that there are 7 years straight of crumby weather. V. low chance it will happen but … Lets choose a realistic scenario where the peak sun hours per day based on yearly averages goes from 5.2 hrs to 4 hrs. We think that’s a reasonable scenario. Your estimated payback increases to less than 6 years. Still decent. And again, unlikely to happen. Less than 5 year pay back for a 5KW system is the most likely scenario.

Here is the best news. For 10KW solar system the payback period for Solar Shop Hua Hin systems reduces to about 4 years. If I choose a community electricity rate of, say, 6 Baht/unit the payback is an amazing 3 years! And then if I choose a higher electricity rate often charged to condo owners. Well, I think you get the point. The pay back period becomes incredibly fast. So the moral of the story is is that the larger the system and the higher the electricity rate, the faster solar systems pays themselves off. And the more energy savings you will have long term.

So all hypothetical answers but we think decent estimates.

I hope this helps you rest easy.

Our Best,

Greg and Team.

Efficiency of Solar Systems Designed for Flat Roofs: What You Need to Know!

written by Greg Shaw, Solar Energy Consultant and Managing Director, Hua Hin Solar Co., Ltd.

Good afternoon!

There has been talk about the “efficiency” of solar systems and what makes one solar system design better than another. Globally, most panels arrays are mounted so as to follow the slope of the roof. We were recently asked if panels be sloped (not laid flat) on a flat roof top made of cement? Our recommendation? If your flat-top roof is of sufficient size the answer is YES.

Of course, if you make the special request to have your panels lay flat on your flat roof top so they cannot be seen we can certainly do so for you. Just ask and it will be done. But do consider the following:

The panels should be sloped more than 10 degrees and if possible face southward. This is important because the sun remains in the southern sky in Thailand most of the year. Your system will produce greater output on average for the entire year with the panels sloped more than 10 degrees southward. Just a caveat. If the panels cannot be sloped southward, east and west also work well. Remember the old saying, “South good! East, West ok! North bad!”

Panels collect dust and grim when they lay flat. Properly-sloped panels self-clean themselves when it rains. So ask your installer to slope them properly.

You should also know that it costs installers more money to slope tiles – as more labour and fewer & less-expensive roof-mounting equipment is required than mounting the panels flat. So there is a ‘pricing-profit give-and-take’ to suggest mounting them sloped vs. laying them flat.

There are some final caveats to take in when considering sloping panels on your flat roof. Your roof has to be large enough to space out the sloped panels so that the leading panels located southward do not cast shadows on the panels located behind them – reducing the solar system overall efficiency. That is where our experience as solar consultants/engineers comes into play. You always need a proper solar system design and that is our specialty.

We hope this helps!

Choosing Solar Panels. What You Need to Know!

written by Greg Shaw, Solar Energy Consultant and Managing Director, Hua Hin Solar Co., Ltd.

Good morning!

There has been talk about the “efficiency” of solar panels and what makes one panel better than another. The answer may surprise you. As long as you have very good quality panels from a reputable equipment supplier and installer “efficiency” is not as important, as other factors, in making a decision on what to buy. Why you ask? A solar panel is made up of solar cells. Each solar cell must be “efficient” enough to produce the rate power of the panel. So for our 285W or 340W premium mono crystalline panels, which have 60 and 72 solar cells respectively, each cell has to have a high enough efficiency so that collectively, all the cells working together can produce the rated 285W or 340W (within +/- 5W tolerance under standard testing conditions). So if a salesman tells you, ‘our panels have higher “efficiency” than other panels and therefore you should choose our panels’ … Be ‘buyer beware!’ And ask more questions.

Now here’s something interesting! The higher the cell & panel “efficiency” the more power the panel will produce – but again will be limited to the specified power output of the manufactured panel. The panel could also be made physically smaller in size and still output the same rated power – as again it’s solar cells are more “efficient.” So, for example, let’s take our Tier 1 Hyundai Energy panels. Because the cells of the Tier 1 panels have higher “efficiency” they produce 300W and 360W. And YES they are physically the same size as the 285W and 340W panels, respectively. They can produce up to 15W or 20W more power as they have higher “cell & panel efficiencies.”

So you might say the Tier 1 panels are the way to go. We say it depends on your budget as the Korean and Chinese Tier 1’s are a bit more in price. You are paying extra as Tier 1 panels are included in an elite grouping selected by the Bloomberg Energy Group in New York city for the solar panel company’s financial performance. The Tier 1 panels also perform better in higher temperatures. But if you are on a tight budget don’t worry, your system will still perform very well with either the premium or Tier 1 panels on your roof.

When choosing panels (and your supplier and or installer) your checklist should start off with, “Is the panel good quality and what are the panel warrantees?” “How have the other owner’s system performed with the panels?” Is there a stable supply in Thailand for warrantee replacement purposes?” “Do the black coloured solar cells look great – do they have silver or black frames?” “Do they come in different sizes to better fit your roof?” “When were they imported into Thailand?” We include this because panel warrantees and performance curves begin from the shipping ‘bill of laden’ and ‘date or manufacture.’ Ensure your supplier/installer has good turn over and that the panels have been sitting in a warehouse for weeks or months, not for over a year. Bear in mind that warehouses can have humid conditions and rather interesting wildlife (rodents, insects, cats, etc.) so being able to trust your supplier/installer, that they are always receiving new stock from the factory, is important. We have properly vetted our suppliers to ensure they have secure and well-kept warehouses/storage areas with environmental conditions suitable for short-term solar equipment storage. Our equipment supply is also supported by our parent company in Bangkok, Thailand. So this should all provide you with “peace-of-mind” when purchasing equipment and or solar system with our company.

As a further note: We were also recently warned that there are rather scrupulous distributors/suppliers in Asia have been taking old panels (even Tier 1 panels) from solar projects, refurbishing them and then selling them “on discount” as “new.” In some cases the panels have been in use on solar farms for years. If a salesman is giving you an unbelievably good deal on even ‘Tier 1’ panels … Again be ‘buyer beware!’

Now! Your Most Important Question Could be … [drum roll please] … Are the panels mono crystalline or poly/multi crystalline? If a sales person is telling you that his/her poly crystalline panels are higher in efficiency than mono crystalline panels and that’s why you should go with the poly’s … Be smart, be ‘buyer beware’ and ask more questions. Good quality mono crystalline panels TRUMP good quality poly/multi crystalline panels PERIOD!!! That’s because mono crystalline has far more and purer silicon content in the solar cells. Silicon is the key material which reacts with sunlight to make solar power. Mono crystalline panels start into action faster in the morning, are great at picking up scattered/diffuse light, and work harder for you until later in the day. We know this first hand! We have mono crystalline panels mounted on the roof of our family home here in Hua Hin.

The plot thickens. We now sell Seraphim “Tier 1” and Sunfree (European Standard / 380W / mono crystalline / black frames) solar panels with an added technology called “PERC.” Ok so what is PERC anyway? PERC is an added layer of “activated silicon” at the back of each of the solar cells that boosts power output from solar panels. This layer acts to convert more sun energy reflected off of the back of the solar cells into solar power. The new layer also prevents free flowing electrons from being captured by the silicon atoms located in the solar cells. Silicon atoms capturing electrons is bad for solar. Remember, the flow of electrons (called electric current or electricity) is what powers your home. More free electrons = More electricity / power output from your solar system to your property. I hope this is explained in a way that you can best understood :0)

Just putting in an important note here. The majority of solar systems Solar Shop Hua Hin has installed thus far include premium and Tier 1 mono crystalline and now PERC panels. The quality of the solar system as a whole really counts. Together with, being honest, superb European Standard inverters, very good electrical works and solar system designs, the systems are able to produce a significant more amount of output compared to other systems. Just adding that, things will get even more exciting as we install more systems with our new “Tier 1” Seraphim and Hyundai Energy panels with very high panel efficiency, PERC technology and better performance at higher temperatures.

Also adding in a caveat here. If you are on a budget, like silver frames, and feel that the added output from mono crystalline panels do not warrant the higher price tag, poly/multi crystalline panels will still work well for your solar system. And that’s why we also offer very good Sunfree 330W poly crystalline panels in our stock. One of our clients used our poly crystalline panels for the ‘off-grid’ hybrid system with Lithium ion batteries for their tourist resort along the coast in the Hua Hin area. They are very happy with the panels and solar system performance. Another of our customers has reported that his poly crystalline panels helped to significantly reduce his monthly electric bill. Just to further note. We believe that poly crystalline panels are important to consider when choosing a solar system. Solar Shop Hua Hin is about to make available a new Seraphim “Tier 1” poly crystalline panel product line / supply. That way we will cover all bases.

We hope this helps!

You may have heard that one company in Thailand recently over-sized their client’s solar system. The owner was fined by the PEA and now faces the issue of having to turn off the system each month to avoid further fines. Furthermore, having the same installer come back and charge twice to downsize the system to meet PEA policies is a not a professional outcome and can be costly if the owner is double-charged for this dis-service. And what is the point of oversizing a system when the owner will have to switch off the system each month to avoid a negative bill at the end of the month. As we are family-owned. we CARE about our customer’s success with their solar system so we don’t oversize our customer’s systems.

And a bit more … You need an EXPERIENCED and trustworthy installation team. Will they let you know about it if a mishap if it occurs?

As you may know it’s the “ingredients” (European Standard panel/inverter output/efficiency, wiring, system output, performance, ease of WiFi monitoring, durability, warrantees, follow-up service) and values such as honesty and trustworthiness that count. It is very easy to substitute components of systems with “cheap junk” and pass it off as being top of the line. It is very easy to quote, design and install a system that doesn’t meet the expectations and goals of the customer. Your electrical installation needs to be standard with durability and safety in mind. Chalerm spends a lot of time finding the best and strongest accessories for the price.

Finally, we are using very high quality and yield mono crystalline panels.

Even More Q’s and A’s for Choosing Solar Systems in Thailand

written by Greg Shaw, Solar Energy Consultant & Managing Director, Hua Hin Solar Co., Ltd.

We have been asked by many of our customers to continue our series on the Q’s and A’s regarding solar installations at your home. Here we address some important issues that you should bear in mind when looking for your solar installation company. We have paraphrased (not directly quoted) email chains here to keep the article current and relevant. Enjoy!

Q? Why would you choose an engineering team to do a solar system installation?

Our company has the mandate to make solar systems affordable without sacrificing exceptional quality and service. With respect to the later we only operate in the Hua Hin, Cha am and Pranburi area making us very responsive in regards to our follow up service. Our team of engineers regularly produce unique designs (works of art and engineering) that meet the requirements of the owner(s). We do spend a lot of time advising people in the Hua Hin area on what is the best system for them – and in certain cases advise people what to avoid. The partners of Hua Hin Solar Co., Ltd., are engineers with exceptional and diverse experience (please also see our Bios at solarshop-huahin.com/about-us/) and we always do our best to be transparent and honest.

Q? I read some article that it is now possible to deliver electricity back to the net in Thailand, is that true?

A: New legislation in regards to feed-in-tariffs has been enacted into law. As you’ll know the last time licences were mainly given to a few people within elitist social circles. Hopefully this time around it is fair and we can all apply for the licences. We will update you as we find out more info in this regards.

Q? What will be the materials used for the installation (i.e. cabling)?

A: About wiring and accessories. Charlerm (Ooh) my partner sources the best materials available at competitive pricing. Wiring will be standard. The roof mountings exceptional. Know it is very easy to substitute these items with “cheap Chinese junk” and pass them off. It all comes down to if you trust the installer manager. My partner is quit Western in his approach and worries about quality and safety.

Thank you for saying … I fully appreciate your professionalism and I believe (and value) the quality you will deliver. Makes me smile :0)

Q: Will my roof leak if I have solar panels installed at my home?

A: The answer is ‘No’ if you have an experienced and trustworthy installation team. Will they let you know about it if it occurs. Incidentally the solar company has been banned from working at the development permanently.

Q: Can the Hua Hin Solar team be trusted to install at our home while we are away?

A: Here is a copy of one of our recent Facebook/Hua Hin Solar postings which we are particularly proud to post:

“Another 5KW solar system installed. The European family is happy. Three things you can learn from this installation. 1. Our company is also in the business of constructing and restoring roofs and performs electrical works so your roof, electricals, ceilings, etc, will be left exactly as we found it before the job. 2. The owners were also away at work during the installation. Our team was trusted (without an issue) to work at the house without owner supervision. As usual the house was left exactly as it was found. 3. Look at how neat and tidy the installation of the electrical control panels, wiring and solar inverter is (third picture). Reflects on the experience, care and dedication of our team of professionals and shows that the team takes pride in their work. Job well done! :0)”

Q? ‘Hi gregory, Thanks for quotation how do you guarantee the holes through the roof to secure the panel from any water leaks during 10 years or more technically?

A: Hi, Please see attached pictures (copyright care of Nattypicturesphotography) of an installation at another development. The mounting gear seats directly under the tiles.

Q: ‘Hi, One more Q quid in case of typhoon? If the panels get damaged ?

“Further exclusions of the limited warranties include defects:

Caused by force of nature, […] for instance, earthquake, typhoon, whirlwind, volcanic eruption, flood, lightening, snow damage, etc.”

To quote our 1 year guarantee on the solar system and our work:

“Our warrantees for our products and solar energy systems are limited and do not cover Force majeure (storm damage, lightning strike, fire, thunderstorm, flooding etc.), ….

Kind Regards, Greg.

Q: How do you protect the system from Lightening storm ??? I was living in South West of France where our electrical was fully protection from Lightening by a derivation system to the ground can you do this please?

A: Good morning,

My partner who has a Masters in Electrical Engineering explains:
Each system has: Dc current from solar panels and Ac surge from utility grid protection with circuit breakers.
We also connect grounding for the inverter and surge protection (DC, AC) to main ground of the house.

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards, Greg.
