Part 1 of 2: Solar Facts & Myth Busters @ Hua Hin, Thailand

written by Greg Shaw, Solar Energy Consultant and Managing Director, Hua Hin Solar Co., Ltd.

If folks at the cafes and pubs in Hua Hin were quoted as saying, ‘Solar systems are here to stay as they are readily available, reliable, efficient, add value to people’s lives and are cost-effective,’ they’d be speaking the truth. Solar technology has been clearly winning the renewable energy race and undoubtedly will continue to do so for the foreseeable future! There is clearly no better time than today to purchase a solar system.

We receive a lot of questions from our customers. All are important questions and many are similar. So we decided to write down our responses – honestly transparent, truthful & trustworthy – to several of those questions which, as we would say in “Land of Smiles” (=Thailand), are “Same, Same, but Different.”

So firstly please remember that it is our business to know everything (as much as possible] there is to know about the solar energy sector in Thailand and abroad. So let’s put on paper what we have found so you can better understand what you will be buying:

Question #1: What size of solar system will be best for my house or place of business?

Most solar systems installed in Hua Hin are in the 1.5KW to 5KW size range. Some larger households which utilise air conditioners and or have large pool pump systems require as much as 12KW output.

The best way to size your system is to run some numbers. Don’t worry. It will be fun! Please visit our solar investment calculator (solarshop-huahin.com/solar-investment-calculator/) to size your system, as well as determine system outputs. The results are indicative only. For a proper sizing please contact our experienced team today.

Question #2: How long is the payback period?

The amount of time it takes for the solar system to pay itself off and to enjoy free electricity can typically be between 4.5 and 7.5 years. At least the ones delivered by Hua Hin Solar can be. That’s an annual return on investment up to 25%. That’s an excellent rate of return on any investment. Just ask your banker or broker. Utility companies will eventually raise their billing rates quickening the payback process. Clearly it pays to have your system in place today making power from the sun and reducing your power bill. Our little family has ours in place at our home and we love it!

Once again, please do visit our solar investment calculator (solarshop-huahin.com/solar-investment-calculator/) to size your system and determine system outputs. The results are indicative only. For a proper sizing please contact our experienced team today.

Question #3: How fast can an inverter switch from solar inverter to grid or generator and back and will that affect power to my connected equipment or appliances?

Modern solar inverters are computer quick and SMART. The same can be said of the high-quality European standard UPS solar systems provided by Hua Hin Solar. In these systems switching from solar inverter to grid or generator and back is automatic and so fast (within 20 milliseconds) that computers and other connected equipment are unaffected and continue to operate as normal. So … how do you like them apples?

Question #4: Is a solar system a lot of kit?

Let’s take a look at a common solar system. The kind of system you’d want installed in the average home or your place of business. Typical on-grid solar systems are comprised of roof-mounted (1) solar panels and (2) wiring running from your panel array to the (3) inverter – which is typically mounted on the wall beside the electric control panel. OK! So you’d have to admit! The systems are hardly over-the-top in terms of ‘kit’ or equipment. And please don’t me wrong. It takes an expert team to properly install a solar system – to ensure durability and high yield, and to honour follow-up service and guarantee commitments.

Question #5: Will the equipment in use today become obsolete?

Did you know that President Carter had 32 solar water heater panels mounted on the roof of the White House on June 20, 1979? Did you also know that China now produces some 80 percent of the solar water heaters used in the world today. The thermal panels are similar in technology to those placed on the White House close almost 50 years ago. So, exactly how long will it take for today’s highly efficient, affordable and readily-available solar PV panel systems to become obsolete? The fact that solar water heaters, as one example, haven’t changed much should give you the right answer. Not to forget that the first silicon solar cells were invented in 1953 and are in heavy use globally! Heck! The photovoltaic (PV) effect which explains how electricity can be generated from sunlight was discovered in 1839! Obsolete? Are you kidding me?
